Newsletter Messages

The newsletter flows greet customers who subscribe to your WhatsApp list through the storefront newsletter popup. They turn an opt-in into an immediate, branded first message — and optionally a discounted follow-up that drives the first purchase.

There are two related flows:

  • Newsletter Welcome Message — sent right after a customer subscribes.
  • Newsletter Welcome Message Follow-up — an optional second message, usually carrying a discount code, sent a set time after subscribing.

These flows are paired with the storefront feature that collects subscribers. See Newsletter Popup for how the popup, double opt-in, and discount settings are configured.

Both flows are triggered by a subscription, not by a Shopify order:

  1. A customer subscribes through the newsletter popup on the storefront (with double opt-in, after they verify their number via WhatsApp).
  2. If a welcome flow exists, WhatPro sends the welcome message immediately.
  3. If a discount follow-up is configured with a delay, WhatPro schedules the follow-up to send after that delay.

When the welcome message itself is set to include the discount code, the code is delivered inline with the welcome and the separate follow-up is not needed. If the follow-up delay is set to zero, the welcome is used directly and the follow-up step is skipped.

Subscriptions are honored at send time: if a customer unsubscribes between opting in and the scheduled follow-up, the follow-up is suppressed. The endpoint that records subscriptions is signed and validated so the welcome cannot be triggered for arbitrary numbers.

The welcome message is brand-focused; the discount follow-up adds the code.

When a discount is enabled, the code is delivered through WhatsApp’s copyable discount button so the customer can tap to copy it.

The newsletter flows are part of the Newsletter Popup feature, which is available on Growth and Plus. Starter and Basic do not include it. See Plans.

The newsletter tags the customer rather than an order: a customer who subscribes through the WhatsApp newsletter popup is tagged so you can build a Shopify customer segment of your WhatsApp subscribers and target them in campaigns. For the full tagging model, see Order tags.
